Through a unique mutual aid agreement with WPEB 88.1 FM in Philadelphia, Radio Volta broadcasts its signal through West Philadelphia for 40 hours per week.
WPEB is West Philadelphia's community radio station. In a city with three major public radio stations (University of Pennsylvania's 88.5 WXPN; Temple University's 90.1 WRTI and the NPR behemoth, 90.9 WHYY) and several smaller public stations, WPEB stands out for its commitment to community voices.
Radio Volta also enjoys a close relationship with the Prometheus Radio Project, the foremost consulting and advocacy organization for people and organizations interested in taking advantage of (relatively) new FCC rules permitting licensed microradio stations (Low-Power FM or LPFM). Prometheus has helped to kick off station from Maryland's Eastern Shore to rural northern California, and offers these stations the knowledge of how to traverse byzantine federal radio regulations, as well as the technical know-how of how to get a community radio station off the ground cheaply and reliably.
